Schwenk participates in the Bifrost CCS project in the North Sea
The building materials company Schwenk is acquiring a stake in the Bifrost carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The project is one of the most significant CCS projects in the North Sea. It is based on licences for storage in three decommissioned gas fields in the North Sea – Harald West, Harald East and the Dagny saline aquifer, approximately 200 kilometres west of the Danish coast. In addition, the project will use existing offshore pipelines to transport CO2 to the storage sites.
With a storage capacity of up to 335 million tonnes of CO2, the project aims to establish Denmark as an important hub for CO2 storage in Europe. The EU’s designation of the project as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) and a Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) should significantly facilitate the approval process for Bifrost.
Schwenk is acquiring a 35% stake in the project. A further 45% of the project is held by TotalEnergies Denmark, with 20% held by Denmark’s state-owned mineral resources company Nordsøfonden. The project sponsors also include German gas infrastructure operators VNG and Ontras.
With its stake in Bifrost, the building materials company aims to reduce its CO2 emissions in the long term. Around two-thirds of these emissions are unavoidably generated by the raw materials used in clinker production, particularly in the deacidification of limestone. Without CCS, it is not possible to avoid these emissions, Schwenk emphasises in its press release.
‘Carbon capture and storage is a central component of our decarbonisation strategy. By participating in the Bifrost project, we are creating an important prerequisite for gradually implementing our goal of becoming the first climate-neutral plant in Europe by 2030,’ emphasises Thomas Spannagl, CEO of Schwenk.
This cooperation with the project partners shows how industry and CCS developers can work together effectively to develop practical solutions for achieving climate targets, according to the Ulm-based building materials company.
